Summer Fun with Your Preschooler

The temperature outside keeps rising, snowy days have been replaced by constant rain and gloom and your hair has had about all the humidity it can take. Now add a curious and active preschooler to the mix and you have a summer dilemma. How can you stay cool and happy and keep your child entertained and active during the summer months? Fortunately, there are many activities that you and your preschooler can take advantage of during the summer months that are guaranteed to be fun, educational and engaging all at the same time.

Indoor activities are exceptionally popular during the summer months and as a result, businesses and local entities promote various programs and special events during the summer months. Take your child to the bounce zone at an indoor family entertainment center, purchase a childrens summer movie pass from your local movie theater, attend story time at libraries, malls or childrens shops and purchase tickets to theater events such as sing-a-longs or puppet shows. If you belong to a moms group or play group, organize a local fire house tour or visit a planetarium. You can also beat the heat by heading to a childrens museum or science museum with interactive hands-on displays that are designed for young children. If you work or want your child to prepare for the transition to preschool in the fall, enroll your child at a summer camp at his or her school.

Outdoor activities are also popular during the summer. Consider enrolling in a swim class with your child. Most programs require parental participation until the child reaches age three. If you prefer to watch your children splash and cool off, locate public water fountains at shopping centers or parks. Be sure to check that the fountains have been approved by local health officials for sanitary and safety concerns. Some alternatives to water fun include a visit to the zoo, aquarium or farmers market. Even better, tour a dairy farm and enjoy a fresh ice cream treat with your child,

If you are still searching for ideas to keep your child entertained, check out the June issue of our E-News and organize a family vacation or weekend retreat.

8 Tips For College Students Wanting To Apply For A Credit Card

High school life is over. Youve moved away from home and youre starting a brand new chapter in your life with college. Independence feels great, but its sure to feel greater if youve got your own credit card, dont you think?

8 Tips for College Students Wanting to Apply for a Credit Card

Heres what you can do to make the credit card application process as hassle-free as possible.

Tip #1 Prepare proof of identification. Have your photos ready as well as all your valid IDs. Credit card companies will always have to verify that you are indeed who you say you are before you can proceed any further. IDs where your age is stated are also preferred because you have to prove youre at least 18 years old as well. If you have any bills under your name, take them with you as well because they can serve as proof of residence.

Tip #2 Prepare proof of schooling. Credit card companies generally prefer to issue credit cards to students who belong to accredited colleges and universities. If you belong to such a school then youre in luck. If not, you can compensate it by showing your previous records if theyre excellent, that is. Just like when youre applying for a drivers license, credit card issuers also take academic and extra-curricular excellence as a sign of maturity and trustworthiness in your part.

Tip #3 Prepare proof of financial assets. Student credit cards tend to charge higher rates than usual, but you might be qualified for lower rates if youre already working or you have money and a bank account in your name. Either way, make sure you can submit documentary proof of your work or assets.

Tip #4 Speaking of interest rates, the first thing you should look for in a credit card is the lowest possible interest rates. This might mean not being able to enjoy a reward-based credit card, but at your age, you might not yet afford the higher rates charged by credit cards offering reward points. If you see a 0% APR credit card, make sure to check how long the offer would last and what the standard APR is afterwards.

Tip #5 A number of credit cards allows you to apply even without a cosigner, but some of them tend to have stricter application requirements. If you dont want to go through the trouble of submitting additional requirements, simply ask your parent or legal guardian to act as your guarantor when you apply for a credit card.

Tip #6 Always look for a credit card that allows you to manage your account online. This will allow you to check your account balance regularly and know when and how much you have to pay for your credit card every month.

Tip #7 There are a few additional perks that you might deem necessary. If you are fond of shopping online, look for a credit card that offers you fraud liability guarantee at no extra cost. Other credit cards offer you thank you points for being a prompt payer.

Tip #8 Now that you know what you need from a credit card, find one that matches your preferences and then submit your application. Remember to be courteous and answer all their questions honestly. Youre sure to have your application approved in no time. Have fun with responsible swiping!

Which Printer to Use for Your Child's School Projects

With school education becoming project-oriented, children need to print numerous color images almost every day. This can turn out to be quite expensive as the cartridge ink for your inkjet printer is costly. Yet, as a parent, the last thing you will want is to deter your child's creativity. In addition, you will also want to save your printer from curious experiments, like trying to print on a newspaper or seeing if a Canon i350 Color Bubble Jet Printer produces soap bubbles or not.

Buy cheap inkjet printer

The best way to do both will be to purchase an inkjet printer, which costs approximately $50. Children usually need color and easily accessible printers and not high-quality prints. So, buying an inexpensive inkjet color printer with high cartridge yield or efficient ink usage will be perfect for your childs requirements. You should also check whether the cartridge ink can be easily installed as it is most likely that the printer ink will finish when you are not at home.

The modern branded inkjet printers are quality-tested and cheap does not necessarily mean low quality. Some of the recommended models will be:

HP Deskjet C9067A
HP Color Inkjet C9050A
HP Deskjet 3520
Canon PIXMA iP1600 Inkjet Photo Printer
Canon i350 Color Bubble Jet Printer
Epson Stylus C42UX

Hand down your old printer

The other way to solve your problem will be to buy a new printer for yourself and hand down the old color all-in-one to your child. In this way, the child will also get access to a scanner.

Buy revamped printer

You may also buy revamped printers from the vendors. These are considerably cheaper than new printers, as selling returned goods as new, is illegal. The slightly used or returned printers are reconditioned and then sold with warranty but at discounted rates.

Atlanta Schools Wellness Workshops Project

Atlanta Schools Wellness Workshops Promote Nutrition and Physical Education

When Atlanta Schools opened at the end of August, a new project was initiated. The Wellness Workshop Project kicked off the school year with a workshop that included Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers, author Yvonne Butler, 300 students from the Atlanta School District, faculty members, and community leaders. This was the first ever Atlanta Schools wellness workshop. Atlanta Schools Margaret Fain Elementary Schools Wings of Eagles dance troupe performed to illustrate how much physical energy is used in dance.

The first Wellness Workshop was co-chaired by Dr. Marilyn Hughes, the director of nutrition administration for Atlanta Schools, and Billette Owens-Ashford, Atlanta Schools director of physical education and athletics. The goal of the Wellness Workshop Project is improve the health of the students by identifying health-related problems. It has been proven that health related issues can often have a direct affect on a students academic achievement.

The inaugural Wellness Workshop for the Atlanta Schools had a variety of speakers and displays that provided resources on nutritional based activities and physical education activities. The keynote speaker was Dr. Yvonne Butler. Dr. Butler is a noted author whose book, Healthy Kids, Smart Kids, discusses the impact of diet and exercise on learning and academic performance. Other speakers included Olympic track-and-field gold medalist Gail Severs who spoke about importance of exercise to health and how to stay physically fit.

Atlanta Schools Wellness Workshop Project is part of a broad program that aims to provide both fitness and nutrition strategies for students and staff in all Atlanta Schools. Innovative strategies that will be used include yoga classes for teachers and students, vegetarian cafeteria lines, and walking trails. The overall plan was developed by the Atlanta Schools Board of Education. The Board of Education will offer guidelines on how to implement the program and how the schools will be evaluated.

A major part of the plan is establishing wellness councils. These councils will be comprised of teachers, parents, administrators, students, and community and business partners. The council will assist Atlanta Schools in integrating nutrition and physical education into the current curriculum. The wellness council will also have a presence at events throughout the Atlanta Schools.

Recently, Atlanta Schools wellness plan received a boost from the involvement of an Atlanta Schools parent. Linton Hopkins has two children attending E. Rivers Elementary School. Hopkins is concerned about the nutritional value of cafeteria offerings at the E. Rivers Elementary School but unlike other parents, Hopkins is the executive chef of Atlantas Restaurant Eugene and winner of this years Atlanta Iron Chef competition. Hopkins has joined the Local School Wellness Council to help evaluate the schools cafeteria. Hopkins isnt the only trained chef to join the E. Rivers Elementary Schools wellness council. Elisa Gambino, owner of pasta emporium Via Elisa, has along with eleven other parents joined the wellness council. Parental involvement is an important element to the success of the wellness councils. Currently, approximately 90 percent of Atlanta Schools elementary and 65 percent of high schools have parents actively involved with the wellness council of their school.

Personal Goals as a University Of Phoenix Student

Personal goals I want to achieve as a University of Phoenix student.

There are many goals I want to achieve as a student of the University of Phoenix. Some of them will be easier to achieve then others, but I will be doing my best to accomplish them all. One of the obvious goals is to achieve the highest grades as possible. Throughout High School this was not a goal for me and I chose not to apply myself and was happy to settle for just any grade. In doing so I missed out on a lot of material I could have been studying and learning about. Settling for any grade also posed a problem when I graduated High School. When I graduated High School and began looking into going to college I found I was limited in the colleges I could apply to. I found I was limited due to the below average grades I received. When I started my Associate Degree my outlook on education completely changed and I was not willing to settle for any grade. I also did everything I could to learn and take away as much information I could from each and everything course. As!

I am starting my Bachelors Degree at the University of Phoenix I still have the mindset of obtaining the highest grades as possible. I feel even stronger about obtaining and maintaining high grades. To achieve this I will stay committed to reading all of the material provided and will complete all assignments to the best of my ability.

Another goal I have is to stay organized in school so I will have free time for friends and family. I have been doing this by listing out everything, which is required for me to do during the school week. I list out the assignments and readings as well as deadline for the material to be completed. I have been able to stay organized this way by doing a little work each day. I find pacing myself has been a big help instead of attempting to do everything all as one and waiting until the last minute. I recently began using my lunch break at work to complete some schoolwork as well. This has been extremely useful as it allows me to spend more time with family and friends since a good portion of my daily schoolwork can be completed. It is very helpful having a good portion of my schoolwork done before I even leave from work.

An additional objective of mine is to be able to assist others during the time I am obtaining my degree, as well as after my degree is obtained. I really enjoy meeting others and assisting people any way I can with issues and problems they may have. Assisting people with their problems is a big part of what I do as a police officer and that is one of the biggest motivators that keeps me in the profession. With the education and experience I am receiving at the University of Phoenix I am able to take the skills and experiences and apply them on a daily basis to assist coworkers as well as members of the public whom I deal with throughout the day. I realize some people are not as fortunate to be able to continue their education and feel those fortunate enough to have been able to continue their education have an obligation to assist others. During my schooling I hope to assist my peers with any problems or questions, which may come up. I have some skills in t!

he area of computers, which may be helpful to those who have no had the opportunity to get behind a computer much.

My final goal is to learn as much from my peers as possible. During my Criminal Justice degree program at the University of Phoenix I will have the opportunity to meet and speak with many different people who are doing the exact same thing I am doing as a police officer. Some people will have less experience and others will have more, but most important everyone learned things from their own experiences. A goal of mine is to learn from each and every one of my peers and to take something from each person. Each person will bring to the table different strengths, which will assist me in my field now and for years to come. I hope in meeting new people it will give me the opportunity to build up many more contacts and recourses in the field. These are a few of the many goals I plan on achieving as a student at the University of Phoenix. With determination and discipline I believe I will be successful in achieving these goals.

Certified Schools Provide the Highest Quality Truck Driver Training for New Students

If youve always wanted to learn to drive trucks, the highest quality training will ensure youre on the right road.

As used to be more common in years past, you could rely on the help of someone whos already experienced in the industry to show you the ropes over the course of a weekend or two. But as tempting as this is, in the long run, its an irresponsible approach to take, as even the very best off-the-cuff training sessions fail to properly address everything that is needed to safelyand legallyoperate a vehicle weighing up to 40 tons.

Another approach is to enter a truck driver training apprentice program with a specific trucking company. This is a better method for learning because youre assured of getting thorough training by a certified instructor. And in the end, youll have a commercial drivers license (CDL) that authorizes you to haul cargo across all 50 states.

In this case however, your choice of jobs will be limited to the specific trucking company where you received your training. That means you have to take the routes they want you to take, when they want you to take them. And if theres a decrease in workload, your lack of experience and seniority may mean youll be one of the first people to park it until business picks back up again.

The Best Option: A Certified Truck Driving School

The best approach to truck driver training is, without a doubt, a certified truck driving school. These institutions maintain the highest quality of education, safety, and on-the-road training in order to remain competitive in the marketplaceand to comply with the latest state, federal and local laws. In addition, the best truck driving schools offer tuition assistance and guaranteed employment with a variety of trucking companiessomething that gives you ultimate freedom in choosing your new career.

Certified truck driving schools often have the latest equipment produced by the best manufacturers in the industry. Youll not only learn how to operate these vehicles in accordance with CDL requirements, but also how to operate them to help you maximize safety and efficiencyqualities that truck driving companies look for in new drivers.

A certified truck driving school is also current on any changes in laws or driver requirements affecting the industry. Youre sure to have the most up-to-date training and certifications that will allow you to start right away with no surprises down the road.

As mentioned above, the best schools also offer tuition assistance and a guaranteed placement with any number of the nations most reputable trucking carriers. Youll have your choice of which companies work best for you.

But the greatest advantage of going through truck driver training at a certified school is the starting salary. Most graduates average $40,000 or more right after graduation! This is in part because of the continued high demand for truckers these days, but it can also be attributed to the respect that trucking companies have for the skill sets that new graduates of certified schools possess.

The bottom line is that if youre looking to make the most of a career in trucking, a certified truck driving school offers the best opportunities allowing you to make the most of your career on the open road.

Conservative Report Applauds Bush And Progress Of Florida Schools

The Koret Task Force is a group of Hoover Institution scholars and conservative think tank. The group released a nine-month review report in September that commends Governor Jeb Bush on his efforts to reform the Florida schools.

The results were formally announced at an Orlando Hotel with the members of the Task Force and Bush present, as well as Representative Ralph Arza, a Republican from Hialeah and chairman of the House Pre K-12 Committee.

Paul E. Peterson, the editor for the report, commended Bushs implementation of voucher programs, especially the McKay Scholarship and Corporate Tax Credit programs, both of which pay for students to attend private schools (McKay covers disabled children and the Corporate program covers impoverished children). He called the programs trendsetters for the rest of the nation. Peterson also praised the newly implemented merit-based pay system for Florida schools teachers, the first statewide program of its type in the United States.

The report encouraged the state legislature to restore the Opportunity Scholarship Program for the Florida schools, which the Florida Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional in January. The program enabled students who had attended Florida schools graded as F twice within four years to use state money to attend private schools.

The report stated that Florida schools students had made impressive gains in reading and math on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (F-CAT) since 1998. The Florida schools also are better than the national average in closing the achievement gap between minority students and whites.

The Task Force recommends that the Florida schools accountability system should place more emphasis on student growth, rather than overall performance. Another recommendation is for a less centralized control of Florida schools with more room for individual schools to decide how to spend classroom funding.

The report supports Bushs efforts to repeal the class size reduction amendment, passed by voters in 2002. Besides being too costly for the Florida schools, Peterson stated that very little evidence supported its benefits and recruiting enough experienced teachers is difficult.

Though the study was intentionally conducted by academics in order to distance it from political views that frame the current educational debate, many question the validity of the report. Mark Pudlow, spokesman for the Florida Education Association, the states teacher union, particularly took issue with the reports recommendation to make the probation period for Florida schools teachers five years versus three, noting that it takes away more teacher involvement. As to the other results found by the report, he said they were exactly what the Union expected, with Bush supporters funding it.

The $250,000 report was privately funded with the aid of two Republican donors Outback Steakhouse founder Chris Sullivan and Ft. Lauderdale cardiologist Dr. Zachariah P. Zachariah. Both men have donated extensively to GOP causes, including Bushs campaigns.

Representative Arza said he would fight to protect the governors reforms, as well as to implement the recommendations of the task force to the legislature, including the repeal of the class size reduction amendment for the Florida schools.

We have made progress in this state over the last eight years, noted Bush at the ceremonies. We know, because we measure. Its one of the guiding principles of what we do.

Dallas Schools Tackling Tough Issue of Ethnic Slurs

I am of a generation where Richard Pryor was the only person who ever used the N-word in a public venue. Today, however, rappers and hip-hop music is inundated with the word, and our youth who listen to it mimic their idols. It is considered to be hip, as in dude or homeboy, and it now has become an issue in the Dallas schools, as well as many other schools across the nation.

Recently, a middle-aged, white English teacher in Kentucky used the word toward one of his black students and was suspended for 10 days without pay. The teacher defended his use of the word as trying to relate with the student in a hip manner. As you can well imagine, black parents, pastors and civil rights leaders complained loudly and publicly, many wanting the teacher fired. I cannot say I blame them, since that was my same reaction when I first read about the incident.

Lauren Roberts, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky high school, stated that all the students use the term toward each other, regardless of their race. A Dallas schools teacher at Carter High School sees the same thing in his school and has campaigned vigorously to have the N-word banned from all Dallas schools.

Hollis Brashear has taken up the campaign and wants to see all ethnic or racial slurs banned from the Dallas schools. The Dallas schools already have a policy that forbids the use of obscene and offensive language, but Brashear wants more specific language written into the policy.

Brashear is a native of the city, who attended the Dallas schools. He also was the longest serving trustee of the Dallas schools board at the time of his resignation this past spring. During his tenure, he was outspoken on everything from leadership concerns of different superintendents to racial problems within the Dallas schools. A graduate of Lincoln High School in the 50s, he noted that such language was not proper for students who wanted to make something of their lives, regardless of their race. Brashear pointed out that it is still inappropriate today. It comes down to the basic principles of decency, civility and respect for yourself and others.

You cannot have it both ways. Students who use the N-word as a term of endearment one moment cannot get angry the next when it is used by an Anglo, Brashear pointed out to the Dallas schools board last April. This dangerous double standard is the issue with which the Dallas schools are currently grappling.

According to Brashear, the answer is easy stop using any offensive language, especially in public venues and especially racial slurs. As a veteran Dallas schools trustee, retired military officer of 21 years in the Army Corps of Engineers, graduate of A & M University, owner of an engineering consulting firm, and a successful black businessman, Brashear knows of what he speaks. Offensive language, especially ethnic slurs, does not belong in the Dallas schools and more specific language in school policy is obviously needed for everyones guidance, as well as enforcement of the policy.

Award-winning Boston Schools

Attending an excellent public school is one of any parents highest priorities. For those living in or considering a move to Boston, the award-winning Boston Schools are an excellent choice. Boston Schools and their governing board have the following plan in place to continue the excellence that is the most appealing feature for parents and the community.

A national commendation to the district of Boston Schools was recently awarded by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). The award considers a variety of print and on-line publications in its annual awards competition. Publications of two Boston Schools have earned Awards of Excellence: the Boston Public Schools Career and College Guide, and The Boston Educator.

Effective communication is critical to engaging students, families, staff, and the community in the success of Boston Schools, said Superintendent Michael G. Contompasis. I am pleased that our improved communications efforts have been recognized, and I congratulate the Boston Schools staff and external partners who worked to create these award-winning products.

On September 19, 2006, Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, School Committee Chair Elizabeth Reilinger, and Interim Superintendent Michael Contompasis traveled to New York City to accept the Broad Prize for Urban Education from Eli Broad and the Broad Foundation as the most improved urban school district in the country. The Broad Prize includes $500,000 in scholarship money for the students of Boston Schools. This was Boston's fifth year as a finalist. Boston has earned a total of $1 million in scholarship money, having earned $500,000 total for being selected as a finalist in the previous four years.

" the School Committee, Superintendent Contompasis and his staff have been working hard to accelerate the improvement in all of the city's schools," Mayor Menino said. "This award today could not have been accomplished without the hard work of the staff in Boston Schools and of the students and their families who make Boston Schools an exciting place to be and a great place to learn."

There are 146 schools in the district of Boston Schools. The enrollment in Boston Schools is 57,000 students.

Boston Schools have a unique history; it is the first district in the United States to open a school; the Boston Latin School was founded in 1635, and Mather, the oldest public elementary school opened it doors in 1639. The public school system in Boston Schools is the oldest public school system, started in 1647, and opened the nations first public high school in 1821.

Truly, a public school system that serves, that has a rich history, and continues to be recognized nationally, is one that all Boston Schools parents (or parents considering a move to a new city) should consider enrolling their children in.

Who's Your Mentor?

Whenever we undertake a new venture, be it coaching basketball, some kind of business startup, a hobby or whateverwe usually need help.

Help could come in as simple a form as a brochure, but if were really starting something that is taking us into our own unchartered waters, we will be better served having a guide, rather than trying to figure out how to do whatever it is were trying to attempt.

Henry Ford, in running his company, had a bank of buttons on his desk. When he needed advice on accounting, he pressed a button to call in his accounting guru. For engineering, he pressed another button. Henry Ford was successful, in part at least, because he knew that he couldnt know and do it all by himself. He kept a stable of mentors-gurus who were knowledgeable in areas where he wasnt.

Most of us dont have the luxury of having gurus at our beck-and-call. However, in this computer age, we are closer to being able to reach out for a mentor, anywhere in the world we may be, and anywhere in the world a mentor might be.

We can go one-on-one with someone who knows what we want to know without ever leaving our home.

I was in a group with a financial mentor who told us to, find someone who has what we want, do what they did, to get what they got. Ill admit, I tried that, but didnt get quite the results Id aspired to, however I learned a lot. This method works for some highly dedicated people, but most of us average folks may come up short, as I did.

Im ready to retire, and want to have a renewable income source to keep me financially secure for the rest of my life. I decided to take everything Id been doing for more than fifty years in basketball and market it to the world. This would have been extremely difficult for me in the 70s, 80s and 90s, but now in the new millennium, I can accomplish this via the internet.

Cool. Im ready to go. Now, exactly how do I go about this? My computer knowledge and abilities are minimal. So, I got a mentor. That got me started. Now I have three mentors, and have gone through a couple of others. Because I need new information all the time, I can keep reaching out there into cyberspace to find the help I need. I ask, what do I need to do? and they tell me what to do and how to do it. Do I pay for this? Yes. Whats the alternativegoing to school for years to hopefully gain some of the knowledge they bring to me immediately, or use the trip-fumble-stumble method of trying to do it myself?

When I first started out as a basketball coach, I was a nineteen year old and college student running an after-school recreation program at an elementary school. Even though I had played basketball in high school, I was by no means qualified to teach it.

Upon graduation from college my first basketball coaching position was at the middle school level and I found quickly that I needed more education.

During those formative years of my coaching I searched for as much help as I could get and found it from some of the most talented people of that era.

In the 1960s, I fell in love with teaching basketball defense after reading a book entitled, Mosquito Defense, written by Al McGuire, Marquette Universitys coach. I used his methods of swarming defense successfully for many years, at the junior high and then at the high school levels.

I worked hard at teaching myself how to coach basketball and each season I improved, but it was a slow process.

A few years later, and with some seasoning behind me, my journey to teaching-coach moved up a notch from just reading about basketball to becoming proactive--attending clinics, seminars and camps. Among the clinicians to whom I owe much of what I know about teaching defense was Bobby Knight. This was in the 70s. Knight, at that time, was the acclaimed guru of defense. His approach to playing defense and how to teach it, was innovative and genius to this young coach from California. His man-to-man defense philosophy and techniques gave me the ability to teach individual defense and then be able to build this knowledge right into my team defense. What I learned from Coach Knight, combined with my early success with Mosquito Defense, enabled me to develop my own brand of defense and my Giant Killer defense emerged. Defense was to become my hallmark as a coach and later as an international consultant and lecturer.

These talented mentors inspired me to want to be more than just a successful high school coach. I read what they wrote; took notes on what they had to say at coaching clinics; I participated as a coach in their camps; I even took my players and my small sons to listen to them speak, to attend the camps as players, and to watch their teams practice. None of these mentors knew my name or would remember me, but they influenced my early growth in becoming the teacher of the game into which I evolved.

Now Im a basketball coaching mentor for others. Oh, certainly not like Bobby Knight, Abe Lemons, Pete Newell, or John Wooden. But, I bring my teaching DVD, e-Books, basketball coaches tutoring, monthly newsletter and more to a special niche market. My more than 50 years of basketball playing and coaching experience have been successful, by won-loss standards and in the number of coaches and players Ive helped to develop all around the world.

My focus is on the niche market where new, aspiring coaches venture into the sport without much more of a clue than a 19 year old boy in California had in getting started. I work with these newbie basketball coaches, with coaches who have some experience but are still learning, and even with more experienced coaches looking for a splinter of information which might give them the help they need to get to the next level of basketball coaching success. I work with high school players, whose goal is to play college ball, and teach position specific skills to help them be successful. My goaland my promiseto each coach or player I work with, is that I will take them to a higher level of teaching and playing than they were at when we got started together.

The role of the mentor is to teach and guide the student to a higher level of understanding and skill, no matter what the field of interest may be.

Are you looking for a higher level of success from where you are? Who is your mentor?

Coach Ronn Wyckoff has spent more than fifty years in basketball, as a player and coach. As an international consultant, his programs have reached hundreds of players and coaches around the world. In forty-plus years of coaching, he has coached from school levels to national teams, winning over 70%. Go to http://www.top-basketball-coaching.comSilvie Blog46061

Searching For Free Scholarship

If you happen to search the internet for scholarships lately, you should have discovered that there are many out there waiting to be awarded. Actually, there are thousands of individual scholarship grants waiting to be awarded to qualified individuals. Meanwhile, a portion of these remains un-awarded either because there are few applicants or there are no applicants who qualified.

Because of this, you might ask: How can I, as an aspirant, increase my chances of landing on the right scholarship at the same time, winning that scholarship?

First and foremost, you need to start searching early. This means, you should start your search for possible sponsors during the beginning of your final year in high school. Or, you can even start searching in the middle of your high school years.

When searching, it is good to look for as much as scholarship grants as you can. In this way, you can have enough lists of potential sponsors that you can apply at. And since no one will hinder you to apply on each scholarship sites, you can increase your chances in getting at least one reply.

Searching early will give you clearer idea on what school to enter, at the same time, doing your search early will narrow down your list of scholarships to apply with reference to the compatibility to the course you are about to take and the school you are about to enter.

Staring your search early will also give you time to prepare yourself in the criteria of your targeted scholarship. In other words, if the type of scholarship you are targeting at requires applicants to have working experience, extracurricular activities, good grades, and others, you can prepare for it before you actually apply.

Knowing the types of scholarships will enable you to choose where exactly do you fit. In reality, there are several types of scholarships with several subs underneath them. Making sure you know what you want and what you are capable of will lead you to better chances of landing at the scholarship that is right for you. This in turn, will increase your chances of winning the scholarship.

These few things will bring you a long way in your search for free scholarship. Remember that scholarships range their grants from partial to full payment on whole college education. And since you wish to aim for the biggest amount, doing best on the application process will give you great advantage in winning your most wanted full scholarship.

Amazing Foods That Prevent Cold Sores

If you are searching for foods that prevent cold sores, you are wise indeed. Nutrition is the most effective and natural way to eliminate cold sore outbreaks.

In this article you will learn about delicious foods that prevent cold sores. You will also discover foods that cause cold sores. Best of all, in about 2 minutes, you will know how best to balance the two for your personal needs. Check it out.

Cold sores are the visible result of the herpes virus replication process. The virus enters a cell on the surface of your face and forces that cell to create copies of itself. Then the original virus destroys the cell to release hoards of new virus. The open cold sore is the result of millions of cells in close proximity that have been destroyed like this.

Lysine and arginine are two amino acids much talked about in their relation to cold sores. Amino acids are small fractions of protein that your body needs everyday to stay in tiptop shape. To create new cold sore virus, the cell needs certain materials. One necessary building block for herpes virus replication is arginine.

Lysine has been proven very effective in treating and preventing cold sores. Lysine prevents cold sores mainly by replacing some of the arginine in your cells. If you have a higher lysine than arginine content in the cells, you are less likely to get cold sores.

Foods that prevent cold sores are rated by how high the ratio of lysine to arginine content. Most foods contain both lysine and arginine. If there is the same amount of both, the ratio is 1 to 1. If there is twice as much lysine as arginine, then the ratio is 2 to 1. This is an excellent ratio for preventing cold sores.

So the strategy here is to increase the ratio of lysine over arginine in your diet. For example: cheddar cheese, in one ounce or 28 grams, contains 588 milligrams of lysine and 267 milligrams of arginine. This is a ratio of lysine to arginine of 2.2 to 1. Excellent.

Here is a list of foods that prevent cold sores. Most meat, particularly beef, fish, turkey and chicken. Cheese, yogurt, milk and other dairy products are also quite high in lysine and often offer a 2 to 1 ratio. Ricotta cheese is unusually high in lysine. Eggs, soy beans, soy products and brewers yeast will also provide you higher lysine intake.

SPECIAL NOTE. Flounder is very rich in lysine. Some people use flounder as a total cold sore treatment. When getting a cold sore, they will eat one pound, or 300 grams, of flounder. This provides 12 grams of lysine. Lysine from food is 200% to 400% more usable by the body than the lysine in supplements. You would have to take 50 lysine capsules, at least, to equal the flounder, which would be crazy. Your body knows the difference.

Here is a short list of foods that cause cold sores. These foods have high content of arginine to lysine. Most nuts, including peanuts, almonds, cashews and walnuts. Grains, such as wheat and oats. Seeds, such as sunflower and sesame, are arginine providers. Also avoid most beans, peas and lima beans. Most vegetables are higher in arginine than lysine, such as carrots, radishes, eggplant, and cabbage. Chocolate is high in arginine.

STOP. Before you give up right here, let me say two things in closing.

Do not hesitate to take lysine capsules just because this form of lysine is not as well absorbed. Many people control outbreaks with the capsules alone. And do not let a special cold sore diet rule your life. You will find relief from cold sores and still enjoy life by testing and finding the balance and combinations that best suit your lifestyle. By taking lysine supplements, you can eat more of the high arginine foods, like chocolate.

It is all about balance. Yes, you can eat all foods you enjoy, as long as you combine them wisely with supplements and sufficient foods that prevent cold sores.

IBM - Thomas Watson Jr.'s Success Story

Famous Quote
'Fear of failure was the most powerful force in my life.'

Growing Up

Unlike most of the other entrepreneurs in this series, Thomas Watson Jr. did not start the business he would later run - he inherited it from his father.

Watson Jr. was born in 1914. When he was 10 years old, his father became CEO of Computing Tabulating Recording and renamed the company to International Business Machines, or IBM. With his father's wealth, Watson Jr. was given more opportunities than most children his age. He had private schooling and was able to travel the world.

But even with all the luxuries afforded to him, Watson Jr. had an unfortunate upbringing. His father was an unsympathetic man whose high demands from his son filled Watson Jr. with self-doubt. He was a troublemaker in school and was given the nickname "Terrible Tom" for his clashes with school authority. After 6 years and 3 different schools, Watson Jr. finally graduated from high school. At Brown University, his unruly behaviour almost cost him the opportunity to graduate.

When he finished at Brown, Watson Jr. joined IBM as a salesman. Reflecting on this period in his life, Watson Jr. would later write, "My three years as a salesman were a time of sickening self-doubt." With his father running the company, Watson Jr. could never be sure if his recognition was because of his true accomplishments or because of his father's name.

Then, in the Second World War, Watson Jr. was a pilot and aide for Major General Follett Bradley who instilled in him a sense of pride, confidence, and determination. After the war, he had become a new man who was ready to take on all challenges.

Starting The Business

After the war, consumer demands for technology products began to change in America. IBM's core business lay in tabulators while more powerful computers were increasingly in demand. Watson Sr.'s method of running his business was to stick to what you know. He refused to see that his bread and butter products were becoming outdated.

In 1952, Watson Jr. took over as president and immediately hired experts like John von Neumann to create IBM computers. Their first computers were the 700 and 650 series, which allowed them to gain a stronghold in the marketplace.

Watson Jr. also differed from his father in that he encouraged a freethinking and independent office environment while Watson Sr. employed a more authoritative approach. The cultural change allowed IBM to better react to the rapidly changing market environment and become the industry leader in innovation.

Having established IBM as the top player in its field, Watson Jr. was about to assume the biggest risk the company would ever take.

Building An Empire

Watson Jr.'s big gamble was to invest $5 billion into researching and developing a new product line of computers that would not only deplete the company of its financial resources but also make its existing product line obsolete. His dream was to open up computers for the masses with the System/360.

In 1966, after many delays and near failure, the System/360 was launched and became an instant hit. The gamble had paid off and Watson Jr. was revolutionizing the industry. Between 1964 and 1970, the number of computers sold soared from 11,000 to 35,000 and IBM's revenues passed the $7.5 billion mark.

In 1971, Watson Jr. experienced a heart attack that almost took his life. The stresses of running IBM had finally caught up to him. Watson Jr. decided to retire and became the ambassador to the USSR. A 1993 Fortune article called Watson Jr. "the greatest capitalist who ever lived."

Sweet Sixteen Parties? More like Sour Sixteen, if you Watch MTVs Reality Show

Its so great to boss people around.
It was awesome having cameras follow meIm awesome and I deserve it.
This is how it should be every time I enter a room. [teen as she is carried in on a litter]
I had to show people how rich I am.

Do these comments make you want to throw up? Of course, and whats worse, theyre real! These bratty statements are actual quotes from the latest MTV reality stars: girls and boys whose super-rich and apparently super-tactless parents give the little darlings anything they desire for their sweet sixteen parties. Throwing elaborate televised bashes that cost upwards of $200,000 and indulging every whim of their prince or princess, the parents show who rules the household (the kids) and what really matters (getting your fifteen minutes however you can, in this case, by buying it). What a great life lesson: If youve got it, flaunt it, and its okay to trash people in your quest for pseudo-fame. These kids make Paris Hilton and Omarosa look like beacons of etiquette and accomplishment.

Sure, MTVs newest reality show, My Super Sweet Sixteen, which premiered last January, is designed to be over the top and outrageous. Thats the whole point. Its the reality TV equivalent of a bloody train wreck: You are appalled, but you just cant avert your eyes. The kids are so obnoxious and so clueless as to how awful they sound, that you stay glued to your tube just to see what horrifyingly selfish thing theyll say or do next.

Never seen the show? It centers around a spoiled teen or two, trailing them as they plan their sweet sixteen party, make outrageous, selfish demands, shed tears, throw tantrums, and torture their peers with lines like, Youre not important enough to be invited. Oh, and then theres footage of the actual party, where the guest of honor may enter riding on a litter, behind the wheel of a luxury car, pulled by horses, or shuttled in a helicopter. The featured entertainment might be Kanye West, Ciara, Rihanna, or Diddy, the king of nouveau rich tasteless excess himself, to name a few. At the end of the night, the kids are presented with sweet sixteen gifts such as luxury vehicles (some get two!), jewelry and even homes. Their overindulgent, self-satisfied parents, portrayed to be every bit as awful as their kidsthe truth, or the result of careful editing we dont knowgloat in the background. I guess money cant buy happiness, but it sure can by popularity.

Before you get too jealous of these pampered kids, consider how tough they have it, with their every whim catered to, their every foot-stamping demand met. As one teen put it, Being rich is hard work! Indeed.

The materialism and extravagance of MTVs show is a far cry from what the average teen can expect. Thank goodness, or wed have a nation of brats, which couldnt be farther from the truth. (TIME magazines Anne Marie Cox wrote of MTVs teens in a recent article, Their blingy flings are not celebrations of accomplishment; theyre celebrations of self.) Even debutantes, those clichd well-to-do southern belles, hold a coming out ball ostensibly not to show off, but to be formally introduced to polite society. Whats more, these debutante balls are often charity occasions, in which the parents of the young ladies, as well as all attending, must contribute a certain sum of money to the cause at hand, according to Wikipedia.

Maybe MTV could take the hintbut doing good works doesnt make for good TV; spoiled, privileged, selfish brats do. Indeed, Cox says, What used to mark the end of childhood now seems only an excuse to prolong the whiny, self-centered greediness that gives infantile a bad name. Far from joining polite society like the debutants of the past, the kids gleefully rip through social graces, alienating friends and sacrificing tact all in the name of creating a VIP room filled with people too young to drive themselves home. Yuck.

So whats the parent of a teen to do when he or she doesnt have a few extra hundred thou lying around? How about inviting a few close friends and family for an intimate, meaningful sweet sixteen party? Make the day extra special by presenting your teen with some nice traditional sweet sixteen presents that wont break the bank, will be appreciated and wont be tossed aside the moment something better comes along. Here are some timeless sweet sixteen gift ideas to celebrate this important right of passage for a child who actually deserves the recognition:

Pearl Necklace: This timeless classic can carry your teen from high school to college to her first job and even to her wedding. Shell treasure it and pass it on to her daughter some day. Round freshwater strands are affordable and can rival the quality of saltwater akoyas.

Pearl Ring: Another timeless treasure, the pearl ring is sweet and demureand unique. Unlike a diamond ring, which has wedding connotations, or a gold ring, which can be too flashy, a pearl ring gets just the right kind of attention.

Pearl Jewelry Set: Why not get her a complete pearl jewelry set? Shell be ensured of having a matching bracelet, pearl earrings and a pearl necklace that she can mix and match for any occasion.

Diamond Studs: A little pricey, but worth it, as diamond studs are a jewelry staple shell wear forever. If responsibility isnt your teens strongpoint, CZ studs can look just as good, and at $40 or so a pop, it wont matter much if she loses them.

Charm Bracelet: A teen favorite for decades, charm bracelets are special because they can be personalized. Add a slipper charm for your ballerina, a horseshoe for your equestrian, a pearl charm for a June birthday girl keep adding charms on every special occasion and soon shell have an unforgettable keepsake.

Frame: A beautiful frame made of brushed stainless steel, wood or mother-of-pearl makes a great gift. To personalize it, fill it with a photo of you and the teen, a poem that reminds you of her, or her birthday horoscope.

For boys, magazine subscriptions and gift certificates to the teens favorite store, or even sixteen of something (16 CDs or 16 movie passes, for example), can make the day special. Best of all? No Diddy required.

Is Online Learning the Right Choice for You?

Benefits of Online Education

An online education has many benefits including lower costs, no travel time, and easy access. All you need is a computer, meaning you can work whenever and wherever its convenient for you. This is especially true for the adult learner, who must often juggle studies with a full-time job.

Characteristics of Adult Learners

There are certain characteristics the adult learner must have in order to fully enjoy the benefits of an online education.

First and foremost, you must be able to use modern technology. You cant access the courses without a computer and the internet, and if you dont have a basic knowledge of how these work you may struggle.

Characteristics of adult learners also include the ability to learn strictly through written words and a good sense of self-discipline.

Naturally, an online education benefits people who prefer to work in solitude, without the distraction of other people around them. You wont have to speak up in a classroom full of people and can instead take time to think over your response to a question before submitting a written answer.

Motivating Adult Learners

There are many factors motivating adult learners to continue their education, particularly with the ease of online institutions. These can range from:

advancing your career,
seeking a raise, or
simply an eagerness to learn new skills or new knowledge.

This motivation is important, because you wont have anyone else standing over you forcing you to attend class or turning in your assignments. Therefore you should carefully consider if youre a self-motivating adult learner who can thrive in the online environment before enrolling.

The Top 10 Terms You Need to Know in the Seduction Community

"Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life."
-Immanuel Kant

Its my mission to give you wisdom: attracting all the positive stuff, repelling all the negative stuff. Theres no sense wasting your time with information and emotions that dont make you a superior man (example: the many, many pickup books that are an absolute waste of time). So Im going to help you attract the information YOU need to know, to get the girls you want!

To do that, Ill be sharing my favorite websites for quality information. Here you can learn all the things you should doand all the things you shouldnt!

The first website you need to know about is UrbanDictionary.com .

So much of the seduction community is centered around terms, initials, and euphemisms. Theres IOI, DHV, negging, cocky funny, inner wuss, ATC, frame controlyou name it, theres a term for it. Knowing these terms isnt crucial, but the meaning of the terms themselves is very special knowledge. For example, you dont necessarily need to know that ATC means Artificial Time Constraint, but understanding the concept of only spending a limited time around women before taking off, is invaluable. Urbandictionary.com is a great website for sorting out all the terms.

Enjoy, and remember: Knowledge is only as good as putting into action. Follow the lead of Kahlil Gibran:

"A little knowledge that acts is worth infinitely more than much knowledge that is idle."

Heres just a sample of the informative (and often hilarious) terms found in this website:

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

Love
"Often confused with infatuation by adolescents, college students and even supposedly mature people. Love is not the often associated chemical reaction which has similar effects on the brain as cocaine, nor is it the inability to be without that person for a day."

-OMG! Im sooo in love with Brad Pitt!!
-No youre not. You just want his small wang. You dont even know him!
-*Cries* No, I will marry him! Im going to go home and fantasize about him! *Cries and runs away*

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

Kino
"The act of making flirtatious physical contact with a person of sexual interest. Generally considered to be a vital tool in ones Game Belt."
Hopefully I can get some action by using a little kino on the ladies tonight.

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

Oneitis
"Often confused with love, this is the feeling that a particular woman is actually special. This is just an illusion; she is the same as the other three or so billion." Go **** ten other women is the most commonly prescribed treatment for this "disease" (hence the "itis"), as it tends to show quite quickly how very alike people are.

In other words, get over yourself and your obsession with that girl, because its just an illusion. And when you get rejected, dont be depressed. Because theres really not much to worry about."
Dude, you definitely have oneitis for that girl. Youve been talking about her nonstop for the past week. Dont you realize shes nothing special, and that you are just being fooled? Snap out of it so you wont be so depressed when she rejects you!
UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

Neg
"A light insult wrapped in the package of a complement. Used by pick-up artists to gain and maintain the attention of women who possess uncommon beauty (9+). These women are immune to standard complements."

The classic neg
pua - "you have beautiful nails, are they real?"
(9+) -"not really"
pua - "Oh, I guess thats still cool"
pua - "thats really cute, your nose wiggles when you speak"
(9+) -"no it doesnt"
pua - "ha ha, there it goes again, sorry, its just really cute"
"I just kept tossing neg after neg at that 10 standing by the bar, and she loved it, she was giving me crazy kino"

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

DHV
"Noun: Demonstration of Higher Value
Verb: Demonstrate Higer Value
Presentation that will increase your value in the opinion of your audience."
I related a funny and cocky joke as a DHV.

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

AMOG
"Alpha Male Of the Group
A guy that everyone thinks is cool and is always the social center of the room."
Bob: Dude, why is everyone crowding arounding that bag of douche?
Me: Cause hes a total AMOG

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

Beta Male
"An unremarkable, careful man who avoids risk and confrontation. Beta males lack the physical presence, charisma and confidence of the Alpha male."
Pete knew he was losing the girl hed just met at the bar to the guy who bought her a drink, but he was too much of a beta male to do anything about it.

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

Sarging
"Verb; to Sarge.
The act of engaging conversational rapport with a complete stranger.
Though tied to the seduction community as the official name for being "on the hunt," the term also applies in business and interpersonal relations, as the act of appearing as a socially versatile and competent person.
Credit to Ross Jeffries, who claims to have named the act after his cat."

in seduction:
"My wingman and I went sarging last night at club X."
other:
"The goal in business is to sarge your coworkers as soon as you start working there. Its a quick way to appear competent!"

UrbanDictionary.com Definition of

mPUA
"Master Pick Up Artist.
Used to refer to one who has attained legendary status within the Pick Up Artist community. Originally used to refer solely to Neil Strauss, aka Style. Referenced in Strausss book The Game."
Man Style kept eight girls on the go, he truly is a mPUA.

And now, my personal favorite definition

Friendship
"A method of castrating men without using sharp objects."
From David DeAngelos article:
She looked at him with compassion in her eyes and said "Thank you I really mean that but I dont want to mess up our friendship youre too important to me"

Now thats something you definitely want to avoid! And if you want to make sure the words "just friends" never enter your eardrums again, visit the place that turns men around the world from "just friends" to "seduction masters":

Diabetes And Your Child's School

If your child has diabetes, it is probably type 1 diabetes, which means that your child is insulin-dependent. Even if your child has type 2 diabetes, you will want to tell the school so that your child is supported during their learning process. You want your child to get the most of their education, and that means helping to make sure that your child gets the proper care at school.

1. Meet with the School

You will want to have a meeting with your childs teacher, every year. This will probably take about 30 minutes to an hour to discuss the teachers questions and your childs needs. Bring along information about diabetes. There are even pamphlets on diabetes aimed at teachers that you can bring with you.

Your childs teacher is going to wonder, Do I have to give insulin treatments? The answer is that no, teachers are not responsible for giving injections. Many children manage their diabetes without ever getting insulin injections at school. Others get their injections at school, and are supervised by the teacher while they do this.

Help the teacher understand the blood glucose monitoring system that your child uses. It might be helpful to create a chart that explains what the different levels of blood glucose are, and what action should be taken for each one.

It is important to determine what policies the school has in place for diabetics. If there are no pre-existing policies, you can help your childs school create thoughtful and inclusive policies.

2. Ally yourself with the Teacher

Especially with younger school-aged children, they might not understand the importance of eating their regular snacks. Ask the teacher to help remind your child to eat these snacks.

Your childs teacher is the best person to observe your child during the day. A common occurrence for children with diabetes is that they develop low blood sugar before lunch. Have the teacher monitor your child to see if there are patterns of lethargy that should be noted and altered (possibly with an extra snack). The teacher can help remind the child to do blood testing as well.

3. Prepare your child

Before your child goes to school, be sure that they understand diabetes. You will want them to know what their responsibilities are.

Remember that as your child grows up, you are transferring the responsibility of monitoring and regulating their own blood sugar from your hands to their hands. During this transition period, you might find that your child makes a mistake, and occasionally misses snacks. This is a normal part of the growing up experience. Help your child overcome these mistakes, but allow your child to make these mistakes in the first place.

Consider getting a medic alert bracelet for your child, or similar piece of identification that explains that they have diabetes so that emergencies can be averted or cared for properly.

4. Help pack the lunch.

When your child is young, you will probably be the one packing their lunch to take to school. Be sure to pack extra snacks in case your child gets low blood sugar at school. Or leave some extra snacks with the teacher if you are worried that your child would eat them all at once. Pack some snacks that are quick to eat, such as carrot sticks instead of an apple, so that your child wont have to

5. Know your rights.

Even though your child is diabetic, your child has a right to participate in every athletic event, field trip, and class outing that is planned. Your child has a right to monitor their blood sugar when necessary, and to eat snacks when they are needed. Your child also has a right to free access to water and to the bathroom. Your child will also be allowed to take as much time as necessary to eat the needed snacks. These rights are mandated by federal law in Canada, and by state law in the United States. If you feel these rights are being violated, begin by contacting your teacher to discuss how you can solve the situation. If this does not work, speak to your school principal, and take it further if necessary. Most times diabetes education will help the school meet your and your childs needs.

The teachers, facilitators, and administration all want your child to succeed in school. Help them by giving them the salient information about diabetes. This can be an experience in ongoing education for you, your child, and the school staff. Let your child help in this education. If your child wants to do a presentation or project on diabetes, encourage them to share their knowledge. If your child prefers to keep quiet about diabetes, respect that right as well.

Baltimore Schools Lose In Court Ruling Favored Charter Schools

In 2005, City Neighbors and Patterson Park Public, two charter schools in Baltimore, appealed the Baltimore schools per student funding formula to the state board. The board ruled in their favor, and the Baltimore schools appealed the boards decision in the Court of Special Appeals, Marylands second highest court. Early this month, the court ruled in favor of the charter schools, requiring Maryland school systems to spend as much money per student at charter schools as they spend at their traditional schools.

Charter schools are publicly funded, but they operate independently under contracts with local school boards. Of the 24 charter schools in the state of Maryland, 17 are located in the Baltimore schools system.

The Baltimore schools per student funding formula differs between their traditional schools and charter schools. Traditional schools receive the equivalent of approximately $11,000 per student. Charter schools receive $5,859 per student in cash, with the remainder received in services provided to the schools by the Baltimore schools system, such as special education and food. City Neighbors and Patterson Park Public contend that this formula limits their ability to choose how to provide services to their students, and the court agreed.

After the court handed down its ruling, the Baltimore schools board met in executive session, issuing a vaguely worded statement. It reiterated that the Baltimore schools remain a strong supporter of charters schools, but believe the recent court ruling will hurt the traditional schools by imposing a financial hardship on the vast majority of them. The statement further noted that the ruling could result in traditional schools receiving less per student funding than the charter schools. Additionally, the statement said that the board is fully committed to complying with the law, but it leaves open the possibility of an appeal by stating that the Baltimore schools board feels obligated to fully consider its legal options.

After the statement was released, City Neighbors board President Bobbi Macdonald stated that they were not asking for more money, only equity within the Baltimore schools system. City Neighbors attorney Will DuBois underscored the fact that both the state board and the court agreed on a funding model that achieves the parity sought by the two charter schools.

The charter schools hope to meet with the Baltimore schools to discuss the courts ruling. They would like to move forward with the Baltimore schools board toward the interest of all Baltimore schools students. Meanwhile, the Baltimore schools board Chairman Brian D. Morris stated that the Baltimore schools currently is analyzing the financial impact of the courts ruling.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Online Education

Getting an online education has become a very popular technique these days. Whether you are looking for a high school diploma or a graduate degree or some specialized certification to supplement your existing knowledge, it is very convenient to obtain these without having to take time off from your schedule to attend a regular educational institution.

There are many advantages associated with online study. Some are given below:

Unlike traditional learning, distance learning can offer you greater flexibility, as you don't have to waste time- and money- commuting to the campus and you can choose a program that truly suits your interests or professional needs, because you are not confined to the classes that are offered locally.

Another advantage to distance learning is the fact that you can continue to work, because you don't have to worry about fitting your classes around your job schedule.

Online programs often cost less than their traditional counterparts, so you can save money on tuition, if you pursue your degree through an online university.

Online study is also a great option for those students with physical handicaps, which may prevent them from traveling to a traditional campus. Likewise, if you are shy, or perhaps even language-challenged, participating in an online course may be the perfect alternative to a live class.

There are some major advantages to online education, including the ability to set your own study time. You may be looking for a promotion or career change that requires additional training or you may simply be ready to learn something new. But with today's busy lifestyle, there's little time to devote to regularly scheduled class time. That's where online education can be a great asset for a motivated person.

Although there are many advantages of an online education, there are also some disadvantages. The fact that you are working on your own could very well be one of the major disadvantages of taking online educational classes.

Another major disadvantage is the lack of interaction. You aren't in a classroom and don't have the opportunity to hear questions and discussion from other students. This isn't always an issue, depending on the subject of the online education course you are taking, but it could be an important factor in deciding whether an online education is the best option when seeking out opportunities for learning new skills or gaining new training.

How To Look Chic And Cool On Campus: Five Tips On Buying A School Bag

Many bags nowadays have the triple F factor--fun, fashion, and function. With the wide range of available choices, you can walk around school in comfort and style. To help you achieve that, here are several tips you'll find handy:

1) Go for established choices.

When you're shopping for a school bag, look for backpacks, messenger bags, boat totes, duffel bags, laptop-style carriers, and ruby Tuesday bags. These types are popular choices among students for very good reasons--they are often spacious enough to accommodate a lot of stuff and also often made of materials that can withstand being stretched to the limit. If you always lug around a ton of readings and notes, such a feature in a bag is a welcome respite from sore arms.

2) Consider the weight of your everyday load.

Think about the weight you'll be carrying on a daily basis. This will help you determine the size of the bag that's just perfect for your needs. A big bag with hardly anything inside looks limp; on the other hand, a small one bursting at the seams looks bulky. If you get the right size, the bag retains its shape even with all of your necessary school things in it.

3) Look at your current wardrobe.

The bag you choose should go along with most of the clothes in your closet. If your style is feminine and flirty (think blouses and skirts), a utilitarian messenger bag is not going to sit right on you. You're better off with a boat tote. The same goes with the reverse. If your look is sporty with your cargo pants and t-shirts, a backpack is a better choice than a dainty ruby Tuesday bag.

4) Pick quality over quantity.

Your school bag is meant to carry a considerable weight. You can't afford to buy just any cheap bag unless you want to run the risk of it falling apart when you least expect it. This means you have to buy something expensive or you have to patiently look for a good bargain. Whatever your budget is, you have a much better option than settling for a low-quality bag.

5) Opt for a safe color.

If your budget permits you to buy just one high-quality bag, buy it in solid black, navy blue, brown, gray, or white. These colors go well with other hues so you don't have to worry about looking mismatched. If that sounds too boring for you, you can always jazz up your bag with scarves, brooches, and other accessories.

You don't have to look like you're walking down a Parisian catwalk when you're in school, but you don't have to be careless about your appearance either. It's not just about looking great for vanity's sake. It's also about making good impressions on your teachers and fellow students. After all, it never hurts to get straight As in your subjects...and in fashion, too.

Report Card on Florida Schools Policy to End Social Promotion

Though it is the fourth largest public school system in the United States, Florida Schools have consistently ranked close to the bottom on academic indicators, including high school graduation rates and national assessment of education progress test scores. For the past few years, Florida schools have been implementing programs to improve student scholastic achievement. Most have been well received and implemented with little-to-no resistance. The End Social Promotion policy, however, has received a lot of resistance from teachers and parents alike and is the most entrenched school custom in Florida schools.

Social promotion is the act of passing onto the next grade a student, who lacks the basic required skills. For many years in Florida schools, retaining or holding back a student has been viewed negatively by teachers, parents and students, placing a stigma upon the retained children and singling them out as abnormally different, inferior and destined to be a failures.

Study research has long held that retention does harm not good, with studies of retained students showing lower test scores in future years as compared to low-scoring students who were socially promoted onto the next grade. Such students were considered a high risk for dropping out of high school, as well.

Florida schools believe that part of this stigma is due to only a small percentage of low-scoring students being retained. If retained students are part of a large group, Florida schools believe the stigma will disappear and retention eventually will be viewed as a positive.

Many educators today believe that much of the previous study results were due to only students with the worse case combinations of skills and personal characteristics being held back, while other low-scoring students were promoted. If everyone in Florida schools sees retention as a beneficial step taken for the students, retained students could benefit from the increased positive attitudes, acceptance and learning atmosphere.

Slowly but steadily, school districts across the United States have begun to require students in particular grades to master basic skills for promotion to the next grade. Chicago was the first system in 1996 to implement a retention policy. Texas and Florida schools followed in 2002, with New York and Philadelphia joining in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Florida schools believe that schools do students no favor by promoting them to higher grades without the basic skills to succeed. The Florida schools End Social Promotion policy requires third grade students to score at a level two benchmark or above on the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

After implementing its retention policy, Florida schools wanted a study to determine the scientific merits and costs (detrimental outcomes) of the retention program. Did attitudes and only specific students being retained influence the previous research? Is the Florida schools End Social Promotion policy working? A study was undertaken.

The Florida schools study compared 2001 low-scoring third graders (before the implementation of the retention policy) to the 2002 low-scoring third graders (the first students subject to retention). In 2001, only nine percent of the low-scoring third graders were retained, as compared to 60 percent in 2002. The study analyzed test score improvements between third and fourth grade for each group. The tests used for comparison were the FCAT and the national Stanford-9. Both are administered at the same time to students. Since only the FCAT is used for the retention program, using the Stanford-9 test scores in the study would indicate if students were prepped only to meet the policy requirements. Additionally, only the FCATs developmental scale scores were used to allow comparison across the two different grade levels.

The findings of the Florida schools study showed that the performance gain of the retained students in 2002 exceeded that of the socially promoted students in 2001. The improvement gains were moderate in reading, yet significant in mathematics. The results were consistent in both the FCAT and Stanford-9 tests, showing the gains were due to student skill mastery rather than prepping.

The study provides valuable information on the short-term effectiveness of the Florida schools retention policy. Due to the short duration of the study, it neither shows all the possible future benefits a student gains from retention, nor does it address any possible long-range negative effects. However, it did provide a surprising result in the substantially improved mathematics scores.

Overall, the study shows that increased efforts by teachers and students to avoid a second retention does improve student proficiency. Whether the effects continue into the future for Florida schools, only time will tell.

Atlanta Schools Have a Busy and Productive Summer

Summer GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) Programs

Students from Atlanta Schools have been very busy this summer. The GRAD projects and programs aim to insure that Atlanta school students make to graduation and then on to university. Several GRAD programs are designed to spark students interest in science, mathematics and arts. This summer rising sophomores, juniors and seniors from South Atlanta, Washington and the New Schools at Carver high schools took part in 2006 Project GRAD Summer Institute. The Atlanta Schools 2006 Project GRAD Summer Institute involved students attending a four week session held at several Atlanta colleges and universities, including Clark Atlanta, Emory, Georgia State, Morehouse, Oglethorpe and Atlanta Technical College. The idea was to give students a taste of college life. Students attended classes, meet school administrators, and spoke with current students. More than five hundred students were allowed to take part in this years project. The students and their parents attended an awards ceremony held at Martin Luther King, Jr. Chapel at Morehouse College honoring the students achievements. Each of participating universities presented awards to the Atlanta Schools 2006 Project GRAD Summer Institute students for the categories of most outstanding, most improved, citizenship and best all around student.

Project GRAD asks students to promise three things: that you will seek assistance and support from counselors whenever you get stuck, add the word cant to the list of four-letter words youve been told not to say, and to continue to reach back and help other students long after you graduate from college. Project GRAD is a school-community partnership program that aims to improve the academic performance, high school graduation and college attendance of inner-city students from low-income backgrounds. Currently Project GRAD operates in approximately one-third of Atlanta Schools and in 211 schools nationwide. Students who complete two summer institutes, maintain the required grade point average in core college prep or technical school courses and graduate on time with their class are awarded $4,000 scholarships to college or technical school.

Special Needs Child

A special needs child can be quite a challenge for many parents, mainly due to the unique individual needs that must be addressed. Depending on the severity of the child?s condition, things such as daily care and education can become quite involved, especially if the child is medically fragile as well. Of course, a special needs child can have any number of issues going on, or it could be just a case of debilitating asthma or a food allergy that requires the child to have special attention and accommodations made for him or her. Some special needs children may be on oxygen, in a wheelchair, or require regular medications throughout the day, and schools are required to make special accommodations available for these kids.Trained staff maybe require to provide proper care that a special needs child need while away from home.

They are a number of resources to help the parent of a special needs child, depending on the level of severity of the child?s issues. Some children may not be able to attend school for medical or psychological reasons, so therefore home schooling is a possible option for a special needs child. Consider a child with severe attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, behaviour problems, autism, or even a child with an auto-immune disorder who is susceptible to every type of germ imaginable. It is not appropriate or beneficial for these special needs children to be in a traditional school environment. If home schooling is not an option, there are a number of facilities that can provide the type of care needed. A number of support groups available both locally and online are available to parents that offer comfort, encouragement, and support serving as a great resource to the parents of a special needs child.

Respite care is very important. Parents of special needs children need a break once in a while, whether it be a trusted friend, neighbour, family member. There are many respite providers who are trained in caring for these children, including registered nurses that can come to the home if needed, to give parents a chance to rejuvenate themselves physically and emotionally from time to time. It is not easy being the parent of a special needs child, but there is a lot of information, resources, and support available to most of these parents. There are many professionals, such as social workers and public and private agencies all over the country that specialize in issues related to the care of a special needs child and the family as well.

There are help forums and information available on the internet. We would encourage parents of Special needs child to read and understand as much as they could which will help built-up the understanding with their child and this is extremely important in the long run.

8 Questions To Ask When Choosing A Medical School

Choosing a college to attend is no easy task so weve come up with eight questions to ask yourself to help narrow down your selection:

1. Will my current high school grades get me into medical school and if not, what can I do to make it happen?
(Note: According to an article on Yahoo! Education [http://education.yahoo.com/college/essentials/articles/college/planning_ahead_med_school.html], Many medical schools do not include community college grades when calculating GPAs.)

2. Do I work better in a large classroom or small classroom?

3. Do I want to sacrifice attending the best medical school (academic recognition) to be closer to family and friends?

4. Do I want the best education money can buy or do I want an education that fits within my current financial situation?

5. Do I want more hands-on training sessions (patient contact) or more lectures and book learning?
(Note: IAMP (http://iamp.edu) offers clinical and didactic training.)

6. Do I want a certificate or diploma so I can start working in the medical field right away? And if so, will the job and certification I receive offer early training for further studies?

7. Will the college help prepare me for further education should I want to obtain a bachelors, masters or PhD or need to transfer to another medical school?

8. What does the college require upon entrance and can I meet all those requirements? (i.e. application; entrance exam; letters of recommendations from teachers, employers, colleagues, etc.; certain grade point average and school records, extracurricular activities, etc.)

Finally, medical school is expensive. Dont forget to ask, Does the medical school offer private scholarships, work-study programs, and a qualified financial aid counselor?

The Institute of Allied Medical Professions, also known as IAMP, has an established record for turning out some of the best medical students in the country. A Review of an Accredited Online Degree From Capella University

The possibility of taking Online degree programs have been one of the biggest direct changes in education due to the internet. It is easy and convenient for working adults to be able to take courses without having to fit classes around their busy schedules or commute to campus. One of the more popular accredited online degree programs is offered by Capella University. This school was founded in 1993 and got its accreditation in 1997. After it was accredited, it changed its name and established five schools: Human Sciences, Technology, Education, Psychology and Business.

The school's headquarter is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Within these five schools, there are about 70 different areas of study with more than 650 classes offered. The Capella school has 650 faculty members, more than 550 employed staff and 13,000 students enrolled in courses. As you can see, this is a real college for higher education with real credentials.

The school has its good points as well as its bad points. In order to draw as balanced picture as possible of this school, let's consider both. It has a special individualized portal for each student, called the iGuide. After you enroll, you're granted secure access through this portal to all the academic information you need. This makes it easy to look at and get an overview of courses and transcripts. Through the portal, you have access to your internet classroom, which they refer to as the 'courseroom', where you can get your assignments and post messages.

Most other schools on the internet have online chats and webcams which often don't work very well. At this school however, the technology is all together and in working order. It has a special system for turning in assignments which is very efficient but still easy to use. Just submit all your assignments as zip files or Microsoft Word documents. That's all you have to do.

The school portal offers access to the alumni center which you can use for networking and looking for employment opportunities. There are many other services available, like access to grants and other public money. Some of the graduates have criticized the alumni center as not being so useful, and being mostly just for show. However, most graduates are very happy with it.

Because this school is targeted to students who are already in jobs, its opportunities for on campus employment are pretty bare. The thought is that the reason you've chosen to study there rather than at a more traditional college is that you are already in a jobs . If you live outside Minneapolis, the school does not offer much in the way of employment for its students.

The school does offer a wide range of services to students with various handicaps. There is a variety of software available, and the staff makes an extra effort to accommodate students with disabilities. The school is consistently ranked high among higher educational institutions for its services for disabled students. There is mobility assistance, sign language interpreter service as well and additional time given to those who need it.

Except from those mentioned about, most other services are somewhat lacking, however. There is a campus bookstore where you can buy various kinds of materials including software, as well as books. Like most college bookstores, you can easily find the same books more cheaply other places if you look around a little. Like most schools, the bookstore is used to make some extra money for the school. But, the easy way out of this, for you, is to buy the books you need on the web somewhere. There are lots of services available for buying textbooks online. In spite of this, the Capella school is quite affordable. There are more and more schools coming on the web every year, and those that want to stay must be competitive.

At Capella, there are five schools within the college. They should be considered or reviewed separately in terms of quality. While the Human Sciences, Business, Education and Technology schools are quite good, the Psychology school has been undergoing some issues. There have been some problems with the management, and this has affected the overall quality of the program negatively. Because of these issues or problems, the Psychology school has had to keep changing its Dean, and this has also added to their problems. At the time of this writing, the psychology school is still not accredited by the American Psychological Association, even though it has been running this program for so long.

This shouldn't reflect too badly on school as a whole. Remember, there are 650 faculty members, so there is a load of variety. As a matter of fact, the quality of the instructors has always been commented on by the students who have graduated here. One thing criticised by many is that so many of the faculty are part time contractors, and thus do not have the interests of their students in mind as a highest priority. It is also charged that many of the teachers here are new to teaching on the web, and in being unaccustomed to it are unable to give the best instruction to their students. This charge comes particularly from students who have attended masters or Ph.D. programs here and found the quality of instruction at that level to be lacking. It could be that the strength of this school is in its undergraduate program.

This is what most students attend the school for, so it may be that the instructors are better able to teach at the undergraduate level. There aren't many complaints from undergraduate students about instructor or teacher quality, so this may be the case.

At the Capella university you certainly get a bit of everything. Whether this school is for you depends on a number of different factors. Retrieving and submitting coursework is easy. On the negative side, the quality of the teaching or instruction has consistently been lauded, if at times inconsistent. The fact that every education program is not yet accredited probably reflects badly on the school.

Nevertheless, as internet programs go, it is rated high in all areas. So, if you are looking into pursuing a higher education online, weigh your options well.
